We have been enjoying daily walks with our dogs since the weather started to warm up. Except for the last two days, the sun has been shining, a light breeze has been blowing, and the flowers are shedding everywhere from the many Bradford pear trees in the neighborhood, like snow drifting through the air, into the yards and driveways, and eventually into the storm drains.
The path we have carved out with the dogs has become familiar to them. Now they lead us! Bodhi, our little male bulldog, loves these walks and has even caused me some serious tendinitis in my right shoulder from pulling on the leash. That behavior has improved, now that he knows he'll be going on a walk every day. He has learned to do what his "sister," Lily, does when it's time to get the leash on or off - he sits. There are three words that both dogs understand clearly: walkies, ride, and chow-chow (dinner). Whenever he starts to get a little wild, we know it's time to go expel some of that energy.
It's helping Lily, too, since she's older (7 1/2) and is getting some arthritis in her hip. Thankfully, the new Science Diet J/D along with a stronger glucosamine and Omega-3 supplement is helping. The daily walks are giving her the exercise she needs to make that hip keep working. Tonight she actually trotted almost the whole time we were walking. It's so good to see her being so lively, because we expect her to stick around for awhile!
When they get tired, though, as they usually are after our walks, they are superb sleepers (and they snore). Lily will find a nice cool spot on the kitchen floor or on the wood floor in the living room. Bodhi will often climb into a chair and pull one of our blankets over himself, like so:
He really does burrow and pull the blanket over himself. I've never seen a bulldog do such a thing, because normally they are too hot. He just loves to snuggle. It must be his way of "denning" because he also likes his crate for sleeping. Since it is upstairs, he makes do with a blanket when he's downstairs with me.
Of course, at other times he just likes a good Snoopy snooze...on the back of the couch. :-)
(notice the one eye he has open?)
